Injury Association’s 23rd Annual State Conference
San Marcos,
Texas, August 8, 2005 – As part of ResCare Premier’s
on going effort to inform our community, we would like to remind
you of the upcoming Brain Injury Association of Texas’ 23rd
Annual State Conference “Threshold for Change,”
August 20-21, San Antonio, Texas.
The conference
brings together people with brain injury, researchers, family members,
service providers, brain injury advocates, staff of state and local
government agencies, and students. The goals of the conference are
to learn, share information and ideas, get updates on programs and
services, and identify ways to build community support for individuals
with brain injury and their families. Attendees may earn up to 10
CE contact hours (six on Saturday, four on Sunday). Information
about registration for the conference, schedule of events, hotel
accommodations, speakers, and continuing education may be obtained
from the Brain Injury Association of Texas’ website at www.biatx.org.
The Brain Injury
Association of Texas conference schedule includes two important
presentations by ResCare Premier’s Joanne McGee, Ph.D. and
Amy Gonzales, P.A.-C.
Dr.
McGee is the Clinical Director of ResCare Premier’s Texas
Operations, the Assistant Presiding Officer for Texas’ Traumatic
Brain Injury Advisory Council and serves on the Board of Directors
of the Brain Injury Association of Texas as Membership Chair. Dr.
McGee will be presenting “Good Grief!”
along with Carolyn Pylant, educator and mother of a son who had
a TBI. Dr. McGee explains, “The presentation will address
the process of grief in the unique way it is experienced by family
members of brain injury survivors--AND it will address what you
can do to help!”
Ms.
Gonzales, Manager of Medical Services for ResCare Premier Texas,
is a nationally certified and Texas licensed Physician Assistant
and a Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Texas
Academy of Physician Assistants and Central Texas Society of Physician
Assistants. Ms. Gonzales will present “Medications
Used for Behaviors After Brain Injury.” “Many
individuals who survive a brain injury suffer from behavioral problems
at some time during their recovery,” states Ms. Gonzales.
“Psychoactive medications become an important component of
the treatment regimen during those times.” Ms. Gonzales will
provide valuable information on how these medications work, the
side effects, and what to look for in terms of the latest medications
on the market.

This year’s
Keynote Speaker is Warren Lux, M.D., Deputy Director
of Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, Walter Reed Army Medical
Center. Dr. Lux will present “Traumatic Brain Injury
and Warfare in the 21st Century.” Conference attendees
will view the documentary film “The Loss of Nameless Things”
and participate in a discussion on disability adjustment. The Featured
Speaker will be Mary Morgan, author of Like a Bolt: Tragedy to Triumph
After Stroke. Finally, there will be a panel discussion “What
is Enough and When is Enough, Enough? The Shiavo Case” with
Cindy Ivanhoe, M.D., David Zientek, M.D., and Steven Waldman, J.D.
