ResCare Premier highlights its on-going advocacy effort.

San Marcos, Texas, May 13, 2005 – ResCare Premier, a leading national provider of programs and services for persons with acquired brain injury, actively supports, promotes and participates in numerous dynamic advocacy efforts for individuals with brain injury and their families. Most recently, Joanne McGee, Ph.D., Clinical Director of ResCare Premier’s Texas Operations, presented at the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators’ (NASHIA) “Grantee Meeting” in Washington, D.C.

As past Chair of the Education Committee and current Assistant Presiding Officer of the Texas Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Council (“TBIAC”), Dr. McGee presented on a unique and exciting project spearheaded by TBIAC: the Texas 2·1·1 Project.

“You may or may not know that, like 411 and 911, 211 is a number you can call for help in many states—non-emergency help, that is,” states Dr. McGee. “The 2򈚑 specialist can provide information about and referral (“I & R”) to health and human service and community resources.”

“The TBIAC 2򈚑 Project involved helping Texas 2򈚑 develop a system to target the I & R needs of survivors of brain injury and their caretakers in three pilot regions: the Ft. Worth region, the Permian Basin region, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley. In the future, the Council hopes to expand the project to include 2򈚑 I & R for brain injury across the state of Texas. Many attendees expressed an interest in starting a similar project in their own states,” Dr. McGee continued.

Each year, grants are awarded to states for improving public health and health care systems for brain injury by the Health Resources and Services Administration (“HRSA”). The money for the grants comes from appropriations of the TBI Act, the only federal program which directly supports brain injury.

Representatives from all states (those awarded grants, advocates, survivors, family members, health care systems administrators, and professionals in the field of brain injury) attend the Grantee Meeting to share ideas, outcomes of projects, develop collaborative relationships, and advocate for individuals with brain injury and their families.

The Grantee Meeting included several other activities. The Brain Injury Association of America (“BIAA”) hosted a Congressional Reception, recognizing the efforts of those congressmen and women who have supported and promoted public policies for survivors of brain injury and their families. At the conclusion of the Grantee Meeting, Susan Connors, CEO of BIAA, and other BIAA representatives provided an educational session on how to encourage your congressperson to support brain injury legislation. The following day, “Capital Hill Day,” Dr. McGee and other meeting attendees went to Capitol Hill to meet with their senators and representatives and to advocate for their support of brain injury legislation.
