Altoona, Iowa, January 15, 2003 - ResCare Premier, a leading national provider of programs and services for persons with acquired brain injury, announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Victorian Acres Premier, is opening two new programs to serve individuals who exhibit challenging behaviors and who have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation or severe and persistent mental illness. Based on our twenty-six year history of serving individuals with a dual diagnosis of acquired brain injury and mental illness or mental retardation, ResCare Premier was asked by many of its payers, potential participants, family members, and professionals to create these specialized environments. According to Ruth Estes, Ph.D., ResCare Premier’s Director of Clinical Operations, “These non-institutional, non-medical, community-based settings utilize neurobehavioral treatment concepts, rigorous medication management, and a least restrictive environment philosophy. Each home is designed to have a focus on individuals with a primary diagnosis of either mental illness or mental retardation.” Dr. Estes continued, “Our residents will all have one thing in common. Each will have been unsuccessful in previous placements.” According to Ms. Kimberly Watkins, Executive Program Director, Victorian Acres Premier, participants can be referred for admission on an emergency basis, for behavioral stabilization, for transition to less restrictive environments, or when necessary, for long-term supported living. “We are not a locked unit and there are limits to the types of behaviors that we can address; however, within those guidelines, we are a very innovative, effective, and cost-conscious alternative.” Since opening its doors in 1989, ResCare Premier has expanded and developed programs and services to meet the diverse needs of individuals with acquired brain injury. We are now expanding and using this expertise to serve individuals with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic and other severe anxiety disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, borderline personality disorder, mental retardation, intellectual disabilities, and other severe and persistent illnesses that affect the brain. As a unique group of interrelated treatment facilities, residential communities, and specialty programs located across the ResCare Premier is an in-network provider for many national and regional health care insurance companies and Workers’ Compensation insurers.
